You have to make sure that you see the apartment before you even think about putting any money down. If someone is trying to charge you to see the apartment in an attempt to push you into an instant sale then this is something that you will want to stay clear from. This is a red flag, and you should always be able to see the apartment that you plan on buying. Take your tie and research the other apartments that are available as well, as this will help you to make the best decision.
Watch Out for Overly Eager Landlords
If a landlord is overly eager for you to rent the space then this can be a warning sign. The problem is that you may not know if they are being eager if it is your very first time renting an apartment. You will want to do everything you can to talk with them properly and also make sure that it is the right one for you. The landlord may be eager and if they want you to rent the apartment then this is great, but if they are willing to skip past any credit checks or anything else similar then this is a huge warning sign and this is something that you will want to look out for. If you love the apartment, it doesn’t matter, because if your landlord is willing to bend the rules just so you’ll rent it, then it probably isn’t worth it anyway.
Love your Neighbors
Before you move into your new apartment, it also helps to get to know your neighbors. You also need to spend some time in the apartment when your neighbors are home, if possible. The main reason for this is because if they have their TV on really loud at nights or if they are continually letting their dog bark in the yard for hours on end then you may want to consider another apartment. Your neighbors can make your apartment a nightmare or the best place to live on earth, so it helps to get to know them a little bit before you move in.
You also need to think about how many shared walls you have. You have to think about whether your bedroom wall is connected to the other side of your neighbor’s wall and you also need to think about where your living room is in relation as well. This will help you to understand the rooms where sound is likely to come through and it is also a great way for you to know if the apartment is right for you as well.
Do They have a Pet Policy?
There is quite possibly nothing better than taking your pet on a trip to the beach or even being able to let your dog off the lead to run in the sea. If your landlord doesn’t allow pets however then this can cause serious issues for you and it may even make it much more difficult for you to enjoy your time there. A lot of landlords will allow you to have pets but if your landlord doesn’t then you have to either work with them to try and get your pet allowed or look for another apartment.
Go In With a List
Walk around the apartment with the landlord and take note of any issues that the apartment may have. For example, does it have air conditioning? Are there any broken handles? It helps to take pictures at this time because it gives you the chance to look over the finer details again when you get home. Of course, it also helps to talk with the landlord to make sure that you are not going to be charged for any repairs that were there before you move in. You should do this before you sign the agreement because after the agreement has been signed, there isn’t much that you can do.
This may sound strange, but it is a good idea for you to know where the power outlets are. There is nothing worse than having a room planned out perfectly, only to find that you can’t have it where you wanted because it won’t fit there or even because you don’t have a power source nearby. You can also chat with your landlord to find out if you can install another power outlet as well, as this is a great way for you to find out everything you need to know about what you can do with the property when you move in.
So renting your first apartment can be tough, and when you’re looking at beachside apartments this can make the whole thing even more complicated, but by looking out for some of the red flags and by taking your time, you can be sure to make a good decision.
